Flattening the Hero

I read a lot of fanfic. I like fanfiction and sometimes it can be easier to read a fic than to actually find and watch/read a new piece of media especially when I just want to relax.
So I've read or at least skimmed more than a few over the years and sometimes it can be hard to find anything good, so than you go to mediocore, and then kinda crappy.

Weirdly, I've noticed a consistant constant thread of OOC-ness that pops up in all different fandoms by different authors in fanfics of all different quality. A lot of people have a tendency to flatten out the characterization of the heroes or main protaganist of whatever the fandom and oddly enough it's not just the ones who write fics without having read or seen the source material. They seem to have gone in to whatever the original material was with a bias of how a "hero" character acts and viewed everything the character does through that lens.

For an example from an actual fic, in a fantasy, urban fantasy, or even comic book setting if a character's job is Vampire Slayer/witch/superhero, just because a character doesn't act like Dexter Morgan (fictional serial killer) or Frank Castle (The Punisher) does not mean that they would let a truly monsterous-looking actively murderous bunch of demons who deeply wants to destroy humanity just go home after a fight so your favorite anti-hero or even villainous character can later say I told you so when the demon comes back with an army.

I have to wonder if at least a part of America's reputation as an overly litigious place has anything to do with the fact that we don't have universal health care. That even with fairly good insurance people still stay up nights worrying whether they can afford the medical bills from any kind of accident or bad situation.

Depressing thoughts brought to you by the government shutdown and my mother's recent death. In 5 hours and 48 minutes it will have been exactly a week since my mom died. I am suddenly understanding why some people go to psychics and really hating that there are those who take advantage of this kind of pain.

This movie was supposed to leave me in a good mood!

I was watching a movie last night and it was going great until the last 10 or 15 minutes. It was billed as a comedic fantasy in some places and romantic comedy with sci-fi elements in others and it was funny and sweet and cute. I thought I knew where it was going, that I was following the points it was making and then all of a sudden there is this horrible twist and it throws everything out the window.

The relationships I'd been watching get built up piece by piece, the pairings that I'd rooted for, and the message about making your own choices, apparently they don't count in the face of destiny. I think the worst part was that the movie acted as if it was a happy ending with upbeat cheery music while I was sitting there feeling betrayed.

Up until that last second I was hoping ha ha another twist actually the lead woman will end up back with the lead guy with whom she had had intense chemistry or heck even an entirely new character given certain issues that were brought up with that relationship. The guy the deus ex machina proclaimed she would end up with was part of the secondary couple with the main woman's stepsister/best friend. Secondary couple didn't have any issues and seemed to have enough in common that in the montage they had long conversations. It was all just so last minute.

Baby's First Livejournal Poll

I just started a free trial for Amazon Prime, oddly enough it's for the second time. I'm not sure why the offered, but since it gave me free shipping and videos for a month I'm pleased.  I just hope that this time I won't waste a bunch of time being overwhelmed by all the choices (that also happens to me on hulu and dramafever) and lose sight of the specific stuff I wanted to watch.

Point of reference, this is IMO something I think is worth getting upset over, rather than silly design changes.

Alright, I am not drunk enough to deal with this, so I'm just going to put out this PSA:

Livejournal Scrapbook is going away. Your 10GB of Paid Member space is now 2GB. If you care, there is an explanation in Russian on the Russian news page. There's also a user-submitted translation.

+ You will no longer have access to your Scrapbook once this goes live.
+ Your images will redirect, but the URL will be different.
+ Unable to tell what will happen to any photos you have that put you over the 2GB limit.
+ Back up your Scrapbook just in case.
+ If you want your photos transferred over now instead of waiting, let them know here.

I knew King 2 Hearts was going to be good, and now I feel fully justified in waiting to watch it and dragging my family into it. They all started out reluctantly but in the end they watched all four episodes and bellyached about five not being out yet. I'd say it was an unqualified success if my father and sister hadn't been arguing with each other on and off through practically the whole thing. I swear those two never know when to stop.

I can't wait for ep five to come out. I tend to avoid previews because they swing between misleading and spoiling too much, but I'm probably going to watch the ones for this show.

Wasabi mash potatoes, where have you been all of my life?

I'm pretty sure wasabi mash potatoes are my new favorite food. The buttery creaminess of the mash potatoes against the horseradishy hotness of the wasabi is amazing and left me with cravings long after I finished it all.

I finally watched the second season of Boss. I didn't love it as much as the first season but this show still makes me so ridiculously happy. So many awesome lady BAMFs and mentoring and Bechdel/Wallace test passing! There's also a quirky team with fun hijinks and badass crime solving.
